Yes, the CONTREAL-TUC (Traffic responsive Urban Control) is the first automatic traffic control system fully national.
This means that all the software and hardware technology are Brazilian, updated by and belonging to Brascontrol, which is a 100% Brazilian company.
The CONTREAL-TUC is provided with an international technical support given by the traffic control expert Professor Markos Papageorgiou. This support is only theoretical, but very necessary, since Brazil does not have experience in systems for this segment.
We can then rate the CONTREAL-TUC as a fully nationally manufactured system solidified with international experience.
A system with this level and technology requires highly trained experts and it takes time to be developed. The local market needs were clear and several companies had tried to invest in this segment, but no company had succeeded in launching an efficient system as the imported ones, since the technological barrier had proved to be very large requiring much technical effort, expertise and high investment in real time control. Brascontrol went ahead and was the first company that managed to bring to the Brazilian market a modern system of automatic traffic control in real time. The system was installed first in Macaé's downtown, State of Rio de Janeiro, and in field had proven the high efficiency performance, similar or better than the imported ones. With this implementation, the first Proactive Automatic Traffic Control System in Real-Time in Brazil was recorded in the Brazilian market. Markos Papageorgiou, developed a pioneering system in Brazil - CONTREAL-TUC, a traffic management system with technology capable of controlling the traffic automatically and in real time.
The Project for Controlling Traffic by Area in Real Time (CONTREAL-TUC) uses existing hardware and software and a modern, fully configurable high-performance algorithm, which receives the characteristics of the intersections of the city and adjusts the time of the traffic lights to the current flow of vehicles based on traffic measurement made by sensors installed on tracks, instantly and automatically.
The real-time control is an evolution of the fixed plans system, which uses only one hourly table as a parameter for the exchange of plans, with pre-defined traffic plans based on manual counting of traffic.
This traditional solution limits the road operation performance, as traffic conditions do not depend only on time but also on factors such as fleet growth and weather conditions, accidents and events. In other words, situations that are not provided for in the plans. In addition, the data obtained in scores quickly become obsolete as time goes by, requiring constant updates, i.e., new investments in traffic engineering.
TUC-CONTREAL is designed to act locally (at every intersection) but with a global vision of the controlled network, i.e., the control actions at each point are made considering the weight of all other network points of traffic lights. This traffic engineering makes the system more robust and efficient than the traditional ones.
All other similar worldwide systems use punctual control. CONTREAL-TUC is the only worldwide Proactive system of this kind.
Due to its different and unique technical system, it is not possible to provide details on how the calculation is performed, but it is possible to explain the result.
CONTREAL-TUC is able to anticipate what will happen at intersections ahead in real time, and what type of traffic will be at intersections in the next traffic lights cycle, even before it happens.
Thus, the system can determine its next traffic light schedule, without limitation, thus acting in a unique and more efficient way when compared to the Australian and European systems.
CONTREAL-TUC applies traffic engineering techniques in real time to calculate the best "green wave" timing for the entire road network, including two-way roads.
This ensures the best possible outcome for the decrease in the number of stops and the delays reduction in the controlled road network.The real-time control reduces delay and the number of vehicle stops by 15% and 50%, compared to fixed plan systems.
In Real Time Photo Radar Systems it is common to have a high cost in installing cables, optical fibers etc., but with CONTREAL-TUC the solution implemented is different and at a much lower cost.The CONTREAL-TUC communication between controllers and the central is done via mobile phone.
This solution is much more economical because the use of GPRS/GSM has the cost of deployment, operation and maintenance lower than using the infrastructure of wires and cables for communication between conventional modems, besides other problems that are common in cities that adopt the cable: the problem of theft, visual pollution and large civil works during implementation that generate disturbance for the population.

The automatic traffic control in real time is currently the most effective technology for controlling traffic lights on city streets. We will briefly explain how this technology works.
A control center is installed, with workstations and high-performance servers that are connected via GPRS (mobile phone), radio, optical fiber cable or even traffic controllers, they receive uninterrupted, real-time information about vehicle volume and occupancy rate from the detectors built-in on the pavement of controlled roads.
The Control Center software analyzes the data, calculates traffic engineering, generates a new timing schedule for the traffic lights according to the real traffic and transmits via GPRS (mobile phone) to be executed by the controllers. All this is done continuously and automatically, in seconds, without human interference. This technology is called "Automatic Traffic Control in Real Time."
The development of a 100% national traffic control system in real-time, by BRASCONTROL in partnership with UFSC, allows the Brazilian cities to access this technology. More accessible, the Brazilian products and services generate savings of thousands of dollars in investment, and avoid the dependence on foreign solutions and maintenance.
The traffic control in real time is an adaptive system, which continuously receives information from the volume of vehicles and levels of flow on the roads controlled. The information received will be immediately processed by the system; the new timing of green, red and delay are calculated, returned to the traffic light controllers to be run.
